Apps or GPS?

There is an app for just about everything in the world right now and GPS is nothing new.
There have been quite a few golf GPS apps on the market but are they really worth it?
Can you buy one of these cheap apps and throw your expensive golf GPS into one of the water fountains at the club? Let’s compare and contrast, shall we?
The most important factor is accuracy. You may be surprised how much of a difference a little inaccuracy can make in your swing decisions. If you know exactly how far you want to go and are well trained to aim for distance then you want the highest accuracy possible. A golf GPS app won’t be so far off that you’ll end up plunking into one of those water fountains near the parking lot, but it could be the difference between the green and a water hazard.
The next consideration is portability. There is no doubt that only carrying one device in your pocket is great but it comes with a fairly big sacrifice in battery life. You are going to be worrying about your battery life all day because you phone is going to be constantly spending power on the GPS app. It’s nice to have your phone off while golfing and enjoying the day but you still want your golf GPS unit to keep functioning right to the end. Overall, the standalone GPS unit wins because they are small enough to throw into a golf bag pocket and they have much better battery life.
All in all, I vote for the standalone golf GPS unit. You are going to get much more life out of it and it’s going to be more accurate overall. If you are just starting then an app is a fine introduction. If you’ve been playing for a while then don’t be tempted to throw your golf GPS in the water fountains until you’ve tested out the apps for yourself and determined if it’s everything you want.
